Our Goal

Our goal is to alleviate homelessness by spearheading the “Build a House” project, aimed at constructing safe and sustainable shelters for the aged people in need across our communities. Through this initiative, we aspire to offer a secure and dignified living environment to those who are currently without adequate housing. By providing shelter, we aim to restore hope, and stability.

What we’ve achieved.

Imagine waking up one day to find your entire surroundings flooded, your roof blown away by relentless rain, or a portion of your home crumbling before your eyes. What would you do? Now, consider the plight of an elderly person or a less privileged person in such a situation.

We have been to communities where some elderly people lack proper shelter, enduring nights in decrepit buildings or even out in the open. This was the story of Mr. Lazarus, a 73-years old man. We met him during one of our outreaches and found out that he lives in a mud house that has started collapsing. Thanks to your support, we were able to provide him with a new home, infusing his world with hope. I still recall the sheer joy that lit up his face the day we handed him the keys to his new abode.

Reflecting on Matthew 25:35–40, we’re reminded of the profound impact of simple acts of kindness. The passage speaks to feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, offering hospitality to strangers, clothing the naked, caring for the sick, and visiting those in prison. It emphasizes the significance of extending compassion to those in need, recognizing that in doing so, we are serving a higher purpose.

The Nehemiah team takes these scriptures to heart, remaining steadfast in our commitment to our vision. We understand that by attending to the needs of the elderly and the less privileged, we are, in essence, fulfilling a divine calling.

Challenges

One significant challenge we face when constructing homes is community conflict. We’ve encountered situations where we’ve had to demolish a home because it was built on community land, not owned by the intended beneficiary. Additionally, we’re grappling with rising building material costs, consistently exceeding our budget.
